Access to Doctorate studies

The recommended access profile is to have completed the Master's Degree in Research, Modeling and Risk Analysis in the Environment, the origin of this doctoral program. It is also considered appropriate to have completed another regulated Master's Degree in Sciences or Applications and/or Branches of Engineering.

The doctoral program is also designed for Spanish students who have graduated with a master's level from Engineering Schools with links to Earth Sciences (Mines, Roads, Forests, Agronomists) as well as graduates from faculties that also have links to the Earth Sciences (Geological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, etc...). In these cases, the required skills and prior knowledge, including foreign languages, are reflected in the entry competencies.

In the case of foreign students, the recommended entry profile is limited to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in the following scientific-technical disciplines: (Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agronomic Engineering, Forestry Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Sciences and Technologies, Biology, etc…)


Admission Criteria in the Doctoral Program

For admission to the Doctoral Program, students must pre-register through the general registration procedure of the UPM. Students will pre-register online, providing the required information, and indicating their preferences regarding the Doctoral Program in which they want to enroll. The UPM Vice-Rector for Academic and Doctoral Planning carries out an administrative acceptance after verifying the applicant's academic information (undergraduate degree and postgraduate ECTS). The academic admission of participants to the Program and to the specific studies of the Doctoral Program will be the responsibility of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program constituted according to UPM regulations by UPM Professors who belong to the Program. The Academic Committee will assess the following aspects and merits of the candidate in the admission process: Once the legally required conditions for access have been met, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will be in charge of selecting and admitting the students in accordance with the following weighted criteria:

  1. The applicant's Curriculum Vitae: Assessment of training and academic record, especially in degrees with skills and knowledge related to the areas of specialization of the Doctoral Program. Professional and research experience, especially in activities related to the areas of specialization of the Doctoral Program. (Weighting 70%)
  2. Verification of sufficient knowledge of the English and Spanish language (in the case of foreign students) in a way that allows them to approach the development of the Doctoral Program without difficulty. The minimum required level of knowledge of the English and Spanish language (if applicable) will be level B2, according to the current terminology of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Knowledge of the English language will be accredited by certificate whenever possible, although this requirement will also be deemed to have been met when the interested party demonstrates it by other means (stays abroad, personal interview, etc.). Weighting: 15%
  3. Student motivation letter specifically indicating the reasons for your interest in pursuing the Doctoral Program. The specific reasoned topic in which you would like to research for the completion of your Doctoral Thesis will be assessed if admitted. Weighting: 15%
  4. In the event that it is necessary to additional arguments For admission (tie between applicants) two procedures are proposed:
    4.1. Possibility of holding an interview between the candidate and at least two members of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program. Weighting: 50%.
    Valuable merits will be: · Capacity for initiative and teamwork. · Motivation and aptitude for studies. · Their commitment to dedication to the Program · Research interests declared by the applicant · Ability to adapt to new linguistic and cultural areas. · Personal characteristics (flexibility, openness, empathy, etc.)
    4.2. Recommendations will be valued through letters of reference from accredited professionals in the scientific fields related to the Doctoral Program. Weighting: 50%
    The admission criteria and procedures for part-time students are the same as for full-time students.
    Acceptance to the Doctoral Program and the entry conditions are communicated through a letter created by the application itself that is sent by email. This letter indicates acceptance into the Doctoral Program; if the Academic Committee considers it necessary for the candidate to complete a series of specific Training Complements, which complement their training and provide them with an adequate level of knowledge for the correct completion of the Doctorate in the Program.
