Biomolecular Stratigraphy Laboratory (LEB)

LEB - Biomolecular Stratigraphy Laboratory

The Biomolecular Stratigraphy Laboratory ( Laboratorio de Estratigrafia Biomolecular- LEB ) of the Madrid School of Mines was born in 1991 as a result of an agreement signed between the Geological Survey of Spain, the main contractor, and the Madrid School of Mines, the subcontractor, in the framework of the Project "Paleoclimatological Revision of Climate Evolution in Western Mediterranean Region.

For age calculation we use the Amino Acid Racemization Method. They are usually analyzed using a gas-chromatograph (GC) or a high performance liquid-chromatograph (HPLC).
One of the greatest challenges confronting palaeontological, archaeological, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatological studies, among others, is the need to place the observations on a chronostratigraphical scale.

We mainly use biomarkers for the study of palaeoenvironmental evolution of different areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Biological marker molecules (biomarkers) comprise chemical records of organisms in the ancient environment: they are organic compounds linked to a specific biotic sources which retain their source of information after burial in sediments, even after some alteration.
