In 2006, and by virtue of an agreement signed between Exolum and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), the Chair of Hydrocarbon Metrology was created with a triple aspect in the fields of training, R&D&I and work. laboratory. Currently the director of the chair is Agustín García-Berrocal Sánchez.

Exolum is a leading international company in the transportation and storage of liquid bulk, especially refined products, chemicals and biofuels, being the company that manages the most extensive network of refined oil pipelines in Europe, occupying the second position in Europe by volume of capacity. storage and the seventh worldwide.

Exolum has the only Metrology laboratory in Spain accredited in the area of ​​calibration-volume by the Administration and in its range of operations by the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC), which is also a Collaborating Laboratory of the Spanish Metrology Center.

The objectives of the chair are:

  • Promote the teaching of metrology knowledge, especially hydrocarbon metrology, collaborating in the training of future engineers and improving the training of Exolum's technical staff.
  • Promote research activities that allow progress in knowledge, providing solutions to real problems in the exploitation of hydrocarbon storage and transportation facilities.
  • Provide the Chair's own laboratory, the Company's equipment calibration service as a complement to the activity of its own laboratory

This chair is limited to the Higher Technical School of Mining and Energy Engineers from where various activities are carried out. The collaboration between Exolum and the school has consolidated very outstanding research projects that have contributed to developing new practical applications for the company.

Likewise, the chair offers scholarships to carry out final-year projects on hydrocarbon metrology topics and the possibility of carrying out internships at Exolum for selected students, establishing a firm commitment to the training of young people.
