Training activities of the Doctorate program

During the development period of the doctorate, the student must carry out a series of training activities. These activities will be composed of:

  • RESEARCH SEMINARS
    • Full time:
      • 1st year: 10 seminars (duration equal to or greater than 45 hours)

In the doctoral program report, attendance at the MIMARMA subject “Preparation of a research paper” is mandatory. Since the Master's Degree (MIMARMA) has not been taught since the 2019/20 academic year, a seminar or course related to this topic should be held.

    • Part-time: (20 seminars in total during the first 3 courses (duration equal to or greater than 90 hours)

In the doctoral program report, attendance at the MIMARMA subject “Preparation of a research paper” is mandatory. Since the Master's Degree (MIMARMA) has not been taught since the 2019/20 academic year, a seminar or course related to this topic should be held.

It is recommended to carry out the transversal training activities proposed by the UPM (More information here) and the Institute of Educational Sciences (ICE-UPM)

The control of these activities will be carried out by the doctoral student's tutor/director, who will reflect it in a document that will be sent together with the annual report to the Doctoral Academic Committee. The doctoral student must present a brief summary report (no more than 5 pages) of each of the 10 seminars they have attended in each academic year, which will be corrected by their tutor professor who will record it in the annual activity report.

  • PARTICIPATION IN CONFERENCES. At a minimum, attendance at an International Scientific Congress and presentation of oral or written communication will be mandatory. This activity will take place during the first two courses.
    • The doctoral student will accredit attendance at the congress with the certificate of participation, which must state whether their participation has been a plenary reading, oral communication or poster, and the book of congress summaries where their communication must necessarily appear. This information will be included in the annual summary.

  • ATTENDANCE AT THE ANNUAL DOCTORAL STUDENT CONFERENCE. A conference will be organized annually in which doctoral students will present the activities carried out during the last year. This activity is recommended for the first course and mandatory for subsequent courses. The UPM organizes an annual symposium entitled "Tell us your thesis" within the transversal training program for the doctorate.

  • PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION OF A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE. It is mandatory that each student publish at least one article in a scientific journal of recognized prestige, that is, in a journal included in the JRC.
    • For doctoral theses started after the 17/18 academic year, the article must belong to a journal of the third quartile (Q3) or higher of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
    • The doctoral student must appear in the article with the affiliation of the "Polytechnic University of Madrid" (without translation into English). Other institutions may appear if you belong to several. This information is collected in the quality criteria for doctoral theses.

  • TRAINING STAY. At least 50% of the students must complete a minimum stay of 3 months in foreign centers or in national centers as long as it is duly justified and provides specific training for the student in the field of research of their doctoral thesis.
