AREAS OF RESEARCH

For the ‘Escuela de Minas y Energía’ (ETSIME), research is a key factor in keeping knowledge up to date, and this is transmitted in turn to students. This develops a parity in the teacher-student relationships, with both sides displaying a desire to learn new knowledge or refine existing knowledge, and catch up with other European countries, traditionally more developed in research, technology, and teaching.

The Third Teaching Cycle is the phase where teachers and students are most engaged. From here, relationships with the Research Centers and Businesses are beginning to become stronger, more serious, and committed. It is at this stage that the bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral theses are being completed, the origins of which were forged in the previous semesters of the courses.

At the ETSIME, the fields of research available are large and multi-genus, a fact which is enhanced by the existence of two laboratories that offer services to many external centers, as well as to the School itself. These laboratories are the ‘Laboratorio Oficial Madariaga (LOM)’, recognized as a Research Group for the Community of Madrid, and the ‘Laboratorio Oficial para Ensayos de Materiales de Construcción’ (LOEMCO).

Recently, the ‘Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’ (UPM) has approved the formation of Research Groups within the University itself, whose objective is to bring together high caliber researchers for joint scientific development work.

The ETSIME management have set about encouraging research, with the creation and development of the Centralized Laboratory, whose infrastructure consists of analytical equipment such as RX Diffraction, RX Fluorescence, and Electronic Scanning Microscopy. The have also created the Technology Center in Getafe, the result of an agreement between the UPM, the Community of Madrid and Getafe City Council, which has been one of the greatest achievements of our Institution. The invaluable participation of the ‘Fundacíon Gómez-Pardo’ must also be mentioned, for the support over so many years in the research and administrative sphere, as well as in management, training, and advice.
